Modular Schools, Berlin

The open space concept is based on three modular design principles that can be adapted to all five locations. New school and sports hall buildings are connected via urban plazas that create clear addresses in the cityscape and efficiently manage different traffic flows. Play, recreation, and sports areas are organized in thematic clusters that promote communication and reduce sealed surfaces through multifunctional use. A wild, organic vegetation perimeter provides protection, structures the schoolyards in a child-friendly way, and offers diverse opportunities for retreat, play, and outdoor learning. Durable, barrier-free surfaces, decentralized rainwater infiltration, and a diverse, climate-active planting concept support sustainability, inclusion, and a vibrant atmosphere.
